Before the formation of Toto the group, members worked as sessions for other musicians. Drummer Jeff Porcaro, bassist David Hungate, and keyboardist David Paich (the son of session percussionist Marty Paich and brother of guitarist Joe Porcaro) played on Boz Scaggs' 1975 album Silk Degrees. The group's collaboration led to formation of Toto in 1976.
The band's third album, Turn Back, marked an abrupt departure from the progressive sound of their earlier efforts and was criticized for its lack of hit singles.
